Discovery at AE depth is not the SDR's light qualification done more slowly — it is a different job. As an SDR you qualified enough to route a qualified meeting to an AE. Now that you own the revenue, you must diagnose whether the deal is real and exactly how to win it. SDR-level questions get you the meeting; AE-level discovery gets you the close. The first 90 days teach you the job is ownership — this module is the skill that decides how well you own it.
Why SDR-level questions aren't enough anymore
A qualifying conversation checks a box: does this look like a fit, is there a pulse, is there a rough budget? That's enough to route. But the moment a meeting dies, it's your quota that bleeds. So AE discovery digs past the surface to the answers you'll actually defend in a proposal and a negotiation:
- The problem and its cost. Not "do you have a pain?" but "what is this costing you, and why does fixing it matter now?"
- The economics. Whose budget, how much, is it allocated, and what's the value case you'd have to beat?
- The decision process. Who decides, what's the timeline, and what stages does a yes actually go through?
- The people. The buying committee, the champion who'll sell for you, and each person's evaluation criteria.
- The incumbent. What they have now, why they might switch, and what that switch costs them.
That's a diagnosis, not a checklist. Each answer shapes the demo and the proposal that come next.
The shift is ownership, and depth follows it
The reason AE discovery is deeper isn't that AEs are smarter — it's that they carry the risk. A deal you misdiagnosed is a demo that misses, a proposal that dies in procurement, and a quarter that doesn't land. Depth is how you protect the revenue you now own. Use the discovery framework the rest of this module lays out, lesson by lesson: a call structure, the real pain, the budget, the committee, the decision process, and the demo that follows. Each is one layer of the same diagnosis.

Discovery depth is a process, not a feeling. The next lesson gives it a shape you can run on every call — a repeatable AE discovery agenda that moves you from symptom to decision in one meeting.
