Connect rate is the share of your dials that actually reach a live person — a decision maker, a gatekeeper, anyone who answers. If you dial 50 numbers and talk to 12 people, your connect rate is 24%. It is the very top of the cold-calling funnel: everything downstream — conversations, meetings, revenue — depends on getting people to answer in the first place. A low connect rate does not mean you are a bad caller; it means you need more dials to hit the same number of meetings.
In plain English
Connect rate is "how many of my calls actually got answered." It is the first and most brutal number in outbound sales, because most calls go to voicemail or nowhere. You cannot turn a call into a qualified meeting if nobody picks up, so connect rate tells you how much volume you need.
Why it matters to you
Connect rate decides your daily dial target. If only a quarter of your cold calls connect, you need four times as many dials as you think. It is also largely outside your control — time of day, industry, and whether numbers are direct dials all move it — which is why the best reps optimise their calling blocks and their list, not their script. Track it, and you stop blaming yourself for a number that is mostly maths.
