Prospecting is the work of finding and reaching out to people who could buy from you but haven't yet. It is research plus outreach: build a list of accounts that fit the ICP, find the named contact who owns the problem, and make first contact with a cold email or cold call. The BDR is the role built around prospecting — cold-opening net-new accounts the company has never touched. Prospecting is what fills the top of the pipeline when there's no inbound demand to work.
In plain English
Prospecting is the difference between waiting for buyers and going to find them. If inbound demand is fish already swimming toward you, prospecting is casting into new water. It is the least glamorous and most important habit in sales, because a rep who only works handed-out leads is a rep whose pipeline depends on someone else.
Why it matters to you
As an SDR or BDR, prospecting is your day. It is where you learn research, relevance, and follow-up — the skills that carry you up the ladder. It is also the skill most people never learn on their own, which is why it's the thing interviewers test. Own your prospecting and you own your territory: the reps who always have a full pipeline are the ones who prospected before they needed to.
