Sales operations, or sales ops, is the function that keeps a sales team running: CRM hygiene, process, forecasting, territory design, data and compensation. Ops builds the systems that let reps spend time selling instead of administrating. It owns how deal regression gets flagged and how weighted pipeline becomes a forecast. It owns the pipeline definitions, the coverage math, and the numbers behind quota and attainment. It is the engine room under the field.
In plain English
If reps are the sales team's face, operations is its backbone. Ops decides what gets tracked, how a deal becomes a forecast, and why win-loss data is trusted. When a process is broken, ops fixes it so the reps can sell.
Why it matters to you
You do not have to run sales ops to benefit from it. Working cleanly with the system — logging activity, keeping pipeline current — makes you look reliable and lifts your forecast credibility. Sales ops is also a strong non-selling career path if you are analytical and organized. In interviews, "I kept my CRM clean" signals process maturity.
When you see a broken process, flag it with the fix you would make rather than just complaining — that is the behavior sales ops exists to reward, and it makes you visible for the right reasons. Clean data is a reputation.
