Ask for the Close: Turning Agreement Into the Dotted Line
Includes: The close: trial closes and the direct ask script
The short answer
Closing is a function you own, not a trick — as an AE, you're the closer. Too many reps do all the work and never make the ask, waiting for the buyer to volunteer a yes. Ask directly: 'if we get the terms right, are we ready to move forward?' Use trial closes to surface hidden objections, make the decision concrete, and then stay quiet and let them answer.
Closing is not a trick and it's not a special personality — it's a function you own. As the AE, you are the closer: the person who carries the deal to signature. Yet the most common reason deals stall is embarrassingly simple — the rep did everything right and never asked for the order. Buyers rarely volunteer a yes; they wait to be asked. Asking for the close is a skill, and it's yours to run.
Use trial closes to surface objections early
Before the final ask, test the water with trial closes that flush out hidden objections while you can still fix them. "If we can get the terms right, is this something you'd want to move forward on?" A yes tells you to proceed; a hedge tells you there's an objection left to handle — better to find it in a trial close than after the final ask.
Make the ask direct
When the value is proven and the objections are handled, make one clean ask. "We've agreed on the value and the terms — are we ready to get this signed and start moving?" Not "let me know when you're ready." A direct, singular ask gives the buyer a clear moment to say yes.
Then be quiet
The hardest part of closing for most reps is the silence after the ask. The instinct is to fill the pause with more talking — and every word you add after the ask is a reason you're giving them to hesitate. Ask, then stop. Let them answer. A buyer who needs a moment of silence to say yes is normal; a rep who can't hold it talks the deal away.
Close from value, never from pressure
A good close isn't pressure; it's the natural end of a deal you've earned through discovery, value, and honest negotiation. If you've done the work, the ask is just making the decision concrete. If you've done the work and they still say not yet, that's a real answer to handle — not a reason to panic.
Start here
You've made the ask and they've said yes. Getting the signature isn't automatic — the next lesson is when the deal stalls before it signs, and how to keep it moving through paperwork and silence.
